SPORTS THERAPY
Is Your Sports Performance Limited By Mental Blocks?
Are your mind and body holding you back from your peak sports performance? Perhaps you have recently recovered from a physical injury, but your game continues to struggle. It’s possible that you suffer from sports performance anxiety, and although you know that you can do better, once you’re playing in front of others, you cannot escape the cycle of mistakes and fear. Has your performance slumped and now you believe all you can do is wait until you bounce back? Or maybe, you are ready to move on to the next level in your sport but need help getting through the crucial mental steps. Do you wish you could feel confident in your body, supercharge your strengths and put aside your fears to achieve your limitless athletic potential?
Struggling to reach your goals in sports can feel frustrating and embarrassing. Throughout the day, you may dwell on mistakes from a previous event or worry about how subtle aches and pains may affect your next game. You may replay your coach’s disappointment, criticism or advice over and over in your head and dread hearing those words again. If you are trying to reach the next level in your sport, you may be practicing or training for hours every day, but see very little improvement. When you spend time with your friends or family, you may feel irritable or preoccupied with thoughts about your previous performance. The more you think and analyze how you perform during a game, the more you may slump or feel stuck on a plateau, unsure if you can ever be the athlete you want to be. Above all, you may worry that your performance blocks are ruining your favorite activity.

It’s Common To Get Frustrated With Your Sports Performance
All athletes go through slumps, experience failure and struggle to push themselves to the next level. It’s also very common to feel overwhelmed with sports-related anxiety because the difference between a good and poor performance is often a matter of tiny details. One main reason for athletic anxiety is the abundance of social pressure from teammates, coaches or peers. When athletes listen to an onslaught of potentially conflicting tips, criticism and pointers from others, they may get stuck overthinking their game and lose ground on their progress. In addition, body and muscular blocks can play a large role in hindering an athlete’s performance. Sometimes the result of a physical injury, these blocks can throw an individual off balance, ultimately making it difficult for the athlete to get back to the level he or she was performing at before the injury.
The good news is that with peak sports performance sessions, you can work with cutting-edge mind-body techniques to push yourself to your fullest potential while maintaining your love of the game.
Push Yourself Beyond Your Peak Sports Performance
During open and engaging sports performance sessions, we will work together to better understand why you feel stuck at your current performance level and pinpoint the emotional and physical blocks holding you back from reaching the next level.
While most of our sessions are held in my office, you may also benefit from hands-on observational therapy sessions, during which we can watch you perform during a sporting event or practice to help you identify how your body and mind may be affecting your game.
In most sports, athletes commonly fear the word “peak” because it implies they can no longer improve their game. To help you push yourself beyond your peak performance, we will focus on bridging the gap between your mind and your body. This work can help you feel more confident when you play under pressure and clear the way for expanded resilience in the future. Some of the techniques we will utilize during our sessions include brainspotting, visualizing strategies, breathwork and mindfulness.
Brainspotting can help you identify and heal old emotions and bodily memories that may be hindering your performance. For example, if you recently suffered an injury, you may guard a certain area of your body even after it has fully healed – ultimately impacting your performance limiting your motions and increasing your stress level. During sessions, we may use brainspotting to clear the lingering memories of your injury so you can feel more balanced and whole when you practice and compete.
Other tools we offer during sessions, such as visualizing strategies, breathing techniques and mindfulness, can help you calm and center yourself during crucial athletic training and high-pressure games. Whether you struggle with a slump in performance, or you want to expand your performance to reach new heights, the tools we incorporate into our sessions will be tailored to your specific needs.
In our experience as therapists, we’ve worked with individuals who compete in a variety of sports including golfers, soccer players, runners, and cyclists. We’ve also used techniques such as brainspotting to work through our own physical injuries. Personally and professionally, we know that therapy works.
Even though you may feel stuck at your current performance level, the truth is there is no such thing as a performance peak – you can attain a higher athletic goal. With peak sports performance sessions, you can work with an experienced professional to help you overcome your performance plateaus, bolster your strengths and rediscover your love of the game.
